What a Journey it has Been! by Dianne Noort, Horsefly, BC

Life means to be living. Problems will always be there. When they arise navigate through them with yoga—don’t take a break. - B.K.S. Iyengar

I have worked hard for other things in my life, but this time it was different.  It is an honor to have become a certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher - every ounce of effort was worth it. With humility I look forward to the continued study and practice of BKS’s phenomenal body of work and feel blessed to have this in my life.

I have made new friends and with my heart on the table I applaud the support and generosity of the Kelowna Yoga House patrons and community. It made all the difference in this pilgrimage. Distinct, unexpected challenges presented in my life and the travel was difficult at times; being greeted by warmhearted and compassionate yoga friends kept me going. Thank you! The gift of yoga is immeasurable. Krisna’s passion, devotion and solicitous methods are pivotal in bringing us as teacher-trainees through this deepening process. Thank you Krisna, for all you do!

When you see a mistake in somebody else, try to find if you are making the same mistake. This is the way to take judgment and to turn it into improvement. Do not look at others' bodies with envy or with superiority. All people are born with different constitutions. Each one's capacities are a function of his or her internal strength. Know your capacities and continually improve upon them. ―  B.K.S. Iyengar, Light on Life

During the time of my training BKS Iyengar passed on and I am now one of those teachers who has never met him in person. I’ve felt some concern over ‘how Iyengar Yoga will evolve’ once the master is no longer present. Jawahar Banghera, who taught at KYH in March, commented that Guru-ji was himself a little disappointed that none of his students surpassed his level of mastery. I feel that the rigor required for training teachers is one of the strengths that will carry Iyengar Yoga forward. Krisna noted how busy and packed the classes were when she was in Pune in January. The momentum in Iyengar Yoga continues and with the unparalleled world-wide commitment of students and teachers alike, the brilliance of Guru-ji’s life-time of service shines through.

In order to find out how to reveal our innermost Being, the sages explored the various sheaths of existence, starting from body and progressing through mind and intelligence, and ultimately to the soul. The yogic journey guides us from our periphery, the body, to the center of our being, the soul. The aim is to integrate the various layers so that the inner divinity shines out as through clear glass.B.K.S. Iyengar, Light on Life

Whatever our reasons for taking Iyengar yoga classes, if we continue something grabs us. We come back for more. There is a (perhaps unspoken) recognition of working on something other than just our physical list of complaints.  In 2003 I began my yoga classes in Williams Lake with Katalin Szauer due to chronic low back pain. I quickly understood the benefits of weekly practice in managing both physical and mental stresses. When I was given a menstrual practice by Katalin I was intrigued and witnessed others practicing for headaches, recovery from accidents, frozen shoulders, scoliosis etc. Wow! My practice morphed and I learned to use asana sequences for restoration, colds, hormonal moodiness and more.

Now I find myself in the small village of Horsefly teaching a dedicated group of 8 - 10 students of mixed ages and levels. At 63 years of age, who knew! This breathtaking journey continues.
