President's Report by Dianne Kapty
COVID-19 in BC – The Public Health Officer order on events and gatherings was updated March 12 to allow up to 10 people to gather outdoors. The requirements for indoor group low intensity exercise (eg, yoga) remain in place. The Public Health Guidelines for Group Low Intensity Exercise have not changed since the last update December 14.
High-level conclusions from the survey done in November were that the current studio space is valued, there is an appetite for more classes including online, and that the KYH teachers are much appreciated. Feedback included gratitude for all that KYH does and for how it has helped during the pandemic. The results have been shared with the marketing committee and with the teachers for follow-up of many good ideas submitted.
Since the AGM in November the board of directors has been meeting monthly in order to be able to respond quickly to changes resulting from the pandemic. Now that vaccines are being administered and the situation is appearing to stabilize, the board will meet every second month beginning in April.
In March the Kelowna Yoga House Society contracted Streamline Strategies to provide marketing services including social media management, newsletter writing, marketing strategy support, and a digital brochure. Streamline will work closely with the marketing committee to promote Iyengar yoga in studio and online.
Tammy Thomas is stepping down from chair of the gardening committee to focus on her own gardening business. Tammy has been responsible for the garden for about 19 years. More recently she worked her magic when the gardens changed from sun to shade when SOLE Kelowna was built next door. On behalf of KYHS I would like to express gratitude to Tammy for creating an urban garden space with such special energy and to wish her well in her future endeavours. Thanks also to Ariaal Ashlie who will take over responsibility for the garden.
On a personal note, I am pleased to report that increasing my attendance at online classes in the New Year has improved my strength and flexibility, and has included a couple of headstands. I still think that KYH yoga teachers are miracle workers for believing I could do a headstand until, after many patient years, it happened!
